The Purity of the Blood, the second of the Captain Alatriste series, was not as much fun as the first in the series being somewhat darker. Carried on in the same vein as the first, in that it was like a boys own adventure, but for men and set in 17th Century Spain. More stories of men, tough ex-soldiers, driven by solemn codes of honour, and motivated to desperate action by uncompromising circumstance. Rather than loads of action, there is plenty of dark and deadly plotting. The novel encompasses a detailed sense of history which is fascinating but yet Perez-Reverte paints inflexible and utterly dreadful situations for women who here, uniformly seemed to be either nuns or whores. Perhaps this realistically mirrors the lives of the majority of women of the times, however the fact that women in general just don’t seem to get much of a voice nor a good deal in the world of 17th Century Spain, doesn’t make this easy reading.

None the less, I was thrilled to be passed this book sourced and recommended by the wonderful Mr Flutterbies9, thank you!
