The last of the Shetland series. It makes me sad because I became attached to the characters, both in the books and in the television series.

"Wild Fire" refers more to the spread of rumors and misconceptions than to actual fire, although there are a few fires involved. The Flemings, a family of "incomers", including Helena, a gifted knitwear designers and her architect husband Daniel, is not welcomed by all in the small village of Deltaness in the Shetland Islands. The previous owner is found hanged in the barn, a suicide, and many take it as proof that the new family took advantage of him. Then a young nanny is found strung up in the barn, and this time it is no suicide.

Emma worked for another family, for Belle and Robert, parents who were easily distracted by their own concerns and were happy to have a nanny who kept the children in line.

As Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves investigate, they find it hard to pin Emma down. Who she was, what she was really like. She was secretive, wedded to an old style of dressing (with clothes she made herself), and she had moved to the island at the age of seventeen, quite young to be on her own.

Meanwhile, Willow has news for Jimmy of a personal nature and it throws him. Will the two ever make it as a couple?

Ultimately, it is partially through the sharp eyes of Christopher, the Flemings' autistic 11-year-old, that the crime is solved, although he himself doesn't fully grasp what he has seen.
