The ex-library softcover arrived safely today, along with the postcards and lovely note - thanks so much! I've enjoyed other books by Silvera, most notably the awesome (and tear-jerking) They Both Die at the End, and look forward to this one. (Good luck with your continued home repairs, btw! My sister's been coping with something similar - badly-designed kitchen plumbing led to mold issues, massive tear-it-all-out-and-start-over work that's taken about twice as long and several times the initial budget. Ah, well!)

Later: Intriguing, and often heart-wrenching novel - a coming-of-age/coming-out tale mixed with the SF concept of a procedure that can selectively rewrite one's memories. And I can't say too much about the story as it would spoil it; there are twists and revelations and flashbacks, with the whole thing themed off of memories (real or fabricated - with some of those fabrications being the ones we do to ourselves for self-preservation, and others the artificially-induced ones). Protagonist Aaron is a teen who's suffered traumas - most notably finding the body of his father after he'd committed suicide - and who is also struggling with friendships and romantic relationships. He'd been happy with his girlfriend until he met a new boy in the neighborhood and got caught up in unwanted feelings for him, making him desperate to have those memories rewritten - could the procedure actually "un-gay" him? And what if he's among those who have potentially harsh side effects...

The story provokes questions about the power of memory - would you want to erase tragic memories? Even if it cost you the memories of lost loved ones? How would you cope if one family member wanted to remove traumatic memories but the rest of the family still knew and had to hide it? How much of what makes us ourselves comes from our memories?

There's an interesting formatting conceit in this edition that I only noticed about halfway through. Each new chapter has a little cluster of smiley-faces in the corner of the page - but the faces have different expressions as the story progresses. Sometimes they're all smiling, sometimes they're all laughing, sometimes one is sad and the others happy or vice versa...
