I found this softcover in this Little Free Library in Nashua NH while dropping off some books of my own. It's the first in a series about Alix of Wanthwaite, daughter of an English baron with rich lands that lie along the Scottish border. When her family is killed and the lands taken, she's forced to flee for her life - but she's not content with mere survival. Dressing as a boy she sets out for London, to try and get justice from the king. Ah, but the king is none other than Richard the Lionheart, who's determined to go on a crusade, so our in-disguise heroine goes too - and gradually becomes a favorite page to the king. Alas for her, she realizes that he's more interested in the boy he believes her to be, so her own feelings for him are in vain. She does wind up with a more congenial love-interest late in this book, but overall I didn't get wrapped up in the story.
