I found this ex-library hardcover in this Little Free Library in Merrimack NH while dropping off some books of my own. It's based on a series of columns in the Financial Times, and is allegedly co-authored by its protagonist Martin Lukes, a rather full-of-himself businessman whose series of emails and messages make up most of the narrative, with occasional messages from co-workers here and there.
In some ways this is like a mirror-image of Diary of a Nobody, in which the well-intentioned but dull and not too bright Mr. Pooter tells his diary all about his small triumphs and occasional embarrassments. But Pooter is a goodhearted fellow at bottom, fond of his wife and son, and does try to do the right thing. Martin Lukes is a self-centered jerk who blithely cheats on his wife, ignores his children despite increasing signs that they're in trouble, and falls in with his bosses' hoo-ha "corporate rebranding" exercises despite their essential meaninglessness. All the while he doesn't do anything actually useful, and sometimes sabotages those who do - or tries to; as the story progresses it's clear that he isn't fooling everyone, and it's quite satisfying when some of his antics get their due. (I was delighted when his wife finally busted his chops for referring to her in all his emails as "my ladywife" - though he utterly failed to understand why she might not like it, a typical move for him.)
Overall, I enjoyed the book - in part because sometimes it's fun to really dislike a character while being entertained by his machinations! (It's also fun to be retired, so I don't have to worry about working for a company like his {shudder}.)
