Osage County, Oklahoma, in the 1920s was where the richest people per capita in the world were to be found. The reason? Oil. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage Indians had untold wealth. Then, one by one, they began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target, her relatives shot or poisoned. As the death toll climbed, the FBI took up the case and began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. Based on years of research and startling new evidence, this is a masterpiece of narrative non-fiction, as each step in the investigation reveals a series of sinister secret and reversals. Killers of the Flower Moon is utterly compelling, but also emotionally devastating.

This is a period of history I know nothing about and was amazed and shocked with some of the revelations. David Grann explains how the Osage were evicted from their homeland to the supposedly worthless lump of rock in Oklahoma. When the Osage start dying in suspicious circumstances, every effort is made to hamper investigations until the fledgling FBI steps in. It is hard to believe the actions of the people in this town. Killers of the Flower Moon is a fascinating account of a shameful period in North America's history.

ETA Nov 2023 - Been to see the Martin Scorsese film based on this book - it's 3.5 hours long! I don't think it felt like the enormity of the corruption was emphasised enough and at times I was confused. I even wondered if bits of it had been ad-libbed as it occasionally seemed a little stilted, maybe even 'amateur'. But I don't want to put anyone off seeing it. I was obviously engrossed enough not to feel like I had been in the cinema almost four hours.

A gripping and powerful read. So much racism and greed. Thanks for making me aware of this book and buying me a copy. I’ve already bought another copy to share. It’s that kind of book.

The book has arrived safely. Thank you very much. I want to read this but I think I'll have to take it steady as I suspect it will not be good for my already high blood pressure.

Journal Entry 9 by Tanamo at Hinckley, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Friday, August 25, 2023
An account of unwarranted greed and man's inhumanity to man and it is still going on in many parts of the world. When will we ever learn? Not exactly a pleasant read but I am glad I have read it.
