I'm familiar with the name of this author, and have collected a few of his novels to try - so the time came to give this book a shot.
Interesting topic. Charles Strickland is a loathsome character. Apparently the novel was based on the life of the artist Gaugin.
While some of the writing was brilliant, overall, I just didn't get into this book. It felt like the author was holding me at arms length and I just couldn't get close to the story.
“Art is a manifestation of emotion, and emotion speaks the language that all may understand.“
“It was the kind of party which makes you wonder why the hostess has troubled to bid her guests, and why the guests have troubled to come.“
“The world is hard and cruel. We are here none knows why, and we go none knows wither. We must be very humble. We must see the beauty of quietness. We must go through life so inconspicuously that fate does not notice us… ."
"… let us be silent, content in our little corner, meek and gentle… That is the wisdom of life.“
