The latest from Atkinson's fine Jackson Brodie series, our jaded PI has relocated to a 'quiet seaside village'. Yeah right!
(31/03/22) *Includes spoilers* I’ve read all the Jackson Brodie books over the years - this is the 6th I think - but have retained very little of the earlier details, and more importantly biog details. In this book we pick up Brodie living alone in a cottage between Bridlington & Scarborough, with regular contact with 1 ex, his son Nathan, and dog Dido. He is also estranged from another wife and daughter (her ‘runaway’ marriage top-and-tails this book), and there is mention of a third significant other who fleeced him. So much back story, I needed some intro notes!
Anyhoo, this multilayered story involves the reopening of historical sex crimes (detectives Ronnie & Reggie ‘The Kray Twins’ of course) interposed with modern human trafficking and the sex trade, plus ca change. Atkinson quite cleverly links the different moving parts as twenty or so characters move about each other, sometimes meeting, in an improbable dance. There are lots of loose ends to tie up, which are done nicely, a form of justice is manufactured on-the-fly by Jackson & Reggie, and a high number of the old and young ‘peedos’ and assorted low-lifes die. Maybe the whole series would benefit form re-reading, which probably won’t happen, but I enjoyed this more-or-less as a standalone novel.
