A set of short stories that are, on the whole, as grim & unforgiving as the Wyoming weatherworn countryside they're set in. That said, there's a few lighter moments amongst these harsh tales of rural & ranch life: I particularly liked the humour of "I've Always Loved This Place" & "Swamp Mischief"- both of which featured the Devil & his demon secretary Duane Fork -& "The Sagebrush Kid" was also a favourite.

A well-written & evocative collection…just don't expect an up-lifting read.

I've finally dipped my toe into the works of Annie Proulx. I'd seen the film 'The Shipping News' some years ago but never read anything by this Author.

The alternative title for this collection of short stories, if I had written the title would have been 'Grin and Bear it' None of them has a happy ending!

I reckon I got on better with the modern day short stories of Family Man, Testimony of the Donkey and Tits-up in a Ditch. Never been a big fan of Historical fiction.
