When Tess Durbeyfield is driven by family poverty to claim kinship with the wealthy D'Urbervilles and seek a portion of their family fortune, meeting her 'cousin' Alec proves to be her downfall. A very different man, Angel Clare, seems to offer her love and salvation, but Tess must choose whether to reveal her past or remain silent in the hope of a peaceful future.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Congratulations on winning the Historical Sweepstakes! I just spotted this new addition to your wishlist and thought it the perfect replacement for the book I first intended to send. That one is way below my expectation, and I am still debating whether to finish it. But enjoy this one. Happy reading!

Thank you very much for sending this book!

UPDATE Jan 2024 - I started reading the book, but the book format is a bit complicated for me ( Amazon books), so I decided to release this one in the wild and purchase a copy from Penguin Classics for myself.

UPDATE Feb 2024

This book made me so angry! I know that we are now in the 21st century and life was different back then, but... literally everyone in Tess's life betrayed her! No wonder the book ended as it did.
I wonder if Hardy stirred up a small revolution by publishing such a book in Victorian times. His heroine is a far cry from the usual literary Victorian ladies. I also could not help but think how much the working-class women actually had to work, and the only difference was that they got paid way less, than men, even though they worked as hard, if not even harder.
