I got this hardcover at a local Savers thrift shop, for another release copy.
I've enjoyed several books by Hahn, who specializes in creepy atmosphere, and this one lives up to that: it opens from the viewpoint of "the girl", who's stuck in a locked room at the top of a house, uncertain who she is or how long she's been there, and "she is lonelier than you can imagine".
Cue the modern-day arrival of a family with a young daughter. The father is tasked with renovating old buildings, and the recently-rediscovered old house is his new assignment. (His daughter Jules hopes they'll be able to settle down, as she's tired of spending a year or less in each new place and then having to leave her friends all over again, but he's reluctant to change the way he works.) Jules immediately spots a little blonde girl peeking out the top floor window, and gradually comes to realize that she's seeing a ghost - but can she do anything to help the girl?
The gradual reveal of the horrific circumstances that left the girl trapped is quite chilling, but Jules and her new-found village-girl friend are brave and inventive, not only working out what happened but coming up with a truly innovative way of trying to help the little girl to move on.
[There's a TV Tropes page on Hahn and some of her work.]
