I got this hardcover at Toadstool Books in Nashua. It's based on a version of the legend of Nian, in which the terrifying monster would attack villagers - unless frightened off by the firecrackers and loud noises. In this version, the spirit of the magical warrior who confined the beast Nian appears to a young girl to warn her how to defeat Nian when it next attempts to gain its freedom. (The story isn't pulling its punches; our heroine lost her father and young brother to Nian's jaws in the previous year. No friendly cartoon dragon, this...) The story describes the different methods used to fend off the beast, each of which contributes to modern customs surrounding the 15 days of preparation for the New Year celebration.
The author's notes at the end explain some of the changes made to the traditional legend - for one thing, making the villainous Nian a dragon, something that would be a harbinger of good fortune in Chinese tradition.
