I found this softcover at a local Savers thrift shop, and nabbed it for another release copy. (It has some highlighting and a few marginal notes from a previous reader.)

In some ways I preferred the beginning of the book, with Pi's background and his interest in spirituality (the bit where his parents find out that he's been studying three major religions all at once is very funny), but the enthralling survival tale of his time on the raft is also compelling - and the surreal, is-it-a-dream-or-isn't-it bits on the island are very memorable. (As I'm one of those readers who can believe several mutually exclusive things at once I have no trouble believing in both of Pi's stories, and refuse to choose only one. But I do prefer to think of Richard Parker romping through the Mexican forests!)

Side note: the description of the scattered pools of water on the floating island reminded me very much of the "wood between the worlds" in the Narnia book "The Magician's Nephew"...

I also recommend the unabridged-audio version as read by Jeff Woodman.

[There's a TV Tropes page about the story, with some interesting and entertaining info. And there's a 2012 film adaptation - and a stage adaption as well.]
