Received as a wishlist tag. Thank you very much. I really enjoyed the first in this series so good to be able to keep reading. :-)
Like Poodlesister I'm really enjoying this trilogy. I wolfed this one down. They are quite fast paced, but have enough plot and character development to keep them satisfying. I can see how this would work well as a tv series.
Caught at the meetup, thank you.
Oh I really wanted to love book 2 in this trilogy, but it wasn't to be. I found it irritating and unconvincing as a novel. Sturmhond was a fantastic character who lit up every scene in which he featured, but the rest was mostly meh.
I think my problems were that:
- The 'star-crossed lovers' thing going on between Alina and Mal was too obvious and repetitive. The latter's character in this volume seemed overly-defined by the relationship and I found him of little interest.
- I wasn't convinced by the main plot arc of Alina becoming a war leader. It all seemed a bit silly given that she only started learning magic in the first book.
- The plot then got stuck in back and forth between Alina, Mal, Sturmhond, etc and I found this wearying.
- I never liked the 'hidden truths of a children's storybook' plot line when J K Rowling did it, and I didn't like it here either.
- The Darkling went in this volume from complex and intriguing leader to comic book villain (imo).
So yes, I was quite grumpy about it all!!!
