To be read.

From amazon.com:
The Joy Luck Club, Tan's remarkable and successful first novel, is followed by this chronicle of Chinese-American life, which shows Tan's growth as a writer. Pearl, the American-born daughter of immigrants, begins the tale with an uneasy visit to her mother for Grand Auntie Du's funeral. Misunderstanding runs deep between mother and daughter: Pearl is married with two young girls of her own, but her mother's life is largely incomprehensible to her. This leads to the large second part of the novel, told in mother Winnie's voice of her young womanhood in World War II-era China. Tan is a gifted natural storyteller. The rhythms of Winnie's story are spellbinding and true, without the contrivance common in many modern novels. Highly recommended.

I liked this book. I found it hard to get into at first. It wasn't until I was nearly halfway through it that I started to not want to put it down. As usual, Amy Tan does a great job of helping you visualize the culture differences between the native Chinese and their American born children. Great story!

I mailed this off this morning to mysteryfan03, as AbbyR asked to be skipped again. DC#03040370000125185605

Arrived this morning - and from the look of things, it's even better than The Joy Luck Club. Thanks very much, jenvince.

Journal Entry 12 by arturogrande from Coalville, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Saturday, January 1, 2005
Having enjoyed The Joy Luck Club so much, I was really looking forward to reading this, but I must say I was a little disappointed.
I found the story quite hard to get into - possibly because I couldn't really engage with any of the characters.
The narrative did pick up later on, but on the whole, this book failed to grab my attention.

It's now on its way to gypsyrose02 in Australia - I hope she enjoys it a bit more than I did.

Journal Entry 13 by gypsyrose02 from Byford, Western Australia Australia on Thursday, January 13, 2005

im sad to say, that i havent even had time to look at this yet. im inundated with rings, so instead of holding this up, im going to send it on. is there anyone else for this book or just send it home?

Journal Entry 15 by gypsyrose02 from Byford, Western Australia Australia on Sunday, March 27, 2005
i finally read this book! i want to start by thanking jenvince so much, for giving me extra time to read this. after reading the joy luck club, i wasnt overly keen on reading this one. but im glad i did. i think i enjoyed this one because it was one persons story, where the joy luck club was from about 4 different peoples view points. i hated her first husband! im a strong person and probably would have killed him! i know their culture is different and it was a different time, but i hated him! her second baby brought me to tears. i would have ripped his arm off getting him away from that cot.
sorry this sounds a bit morbid, but he made my blood boil. all in all, a good book.
will send back to jenvince when i receive an address.

Journal Entry 16 by gypsyrose02 from Byford, Western Australia Australia on Monday, March 28, 2005

Journal Entry 21 by Unbalanced from Hampton, Victoria Australia on Friday, August 26, 2005
I received this book in the Aussie Rural BookBag. I would like to see if any one in the Canberra Bookcrossing would like to read this, so I'll keep this for now, and show it to the clan at the next BC meeting in early September. I'm sure it should appeal to someone in the group.

Wow, this book has travelled.

Journal Entry 22 by Unbalanced from Hampton, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, September 13, 2005
At the BookCrossing Meeting, Peggysmum said I should send this book on a bookray - as she believes this book should do well. So I "caught" my released book and took it back home with me. So I'll see what interest there is amongst the Aussie Bookcrossers.

This book has been on my wishlist for a little while now, so I was very pleased to receive this (very well travelled) copy in this mornings mail. I will get to it as soon as I finish the book I'm currently reading.

Thanks to all who have held this book before me for sending it along.

Journal Entry 28 by bookfairy65 from Yass, New South Wales Australia on Wednesday, October 26, 2005
I just loved this book, Amy Tan is a very talented story-teller. This is the first of her books that I've read, but it definately won't be the last. The story of Winnie's life at times brought me to tears, and at other times had me laughing out loud. I loved the descriptions of the people and places, I felt like I knew some of the characters quite well by the end of the book. I also enjoyed reading about the subtleties of the Chinese culture and etiquette.

I will be posting this off to the next reader as soon as I confirm her postal details.

POSTED 31st OCT '05.

I saw "The Joy Luck Club" when it first came out and read the book at that time and enjoyed it, so am looking forward to another book from this author.

Thanks to unbalanced from Australia for the bookray and jenvince from USA who started this book on its travels. I promise to keep it travelling after I've read it.
