The incredible story of how two Victorian ladies, admittedly very wealthy ones, broke free from their childhood in a small Scottish town and became real-life Indiana Joneses, journeying to remote monasteries to find ancient biblical scrolls, learning a truly impressive number of languages along the way. They overcame enormous obstacles, not least those put in their path because they were women. Their honesty and friendship with the monks led to them being trusted where other researchers were not but it was especially Agnes's talent that meant that they found an early version of the gospels which not only proved that they were written earlier than thought but demonstrated inaccuracies in the accepted bible. The determination, courage and energy of these ladies is inspirational and I learnt a lot about not only biblical research but also how badly Cambridge university and its academics treated women.
