The box of trade books arrived today - many thanks for knocking off so many of my wishlist books at once! I've enjoyed other books in this series, some of them the inspirations for the marvelous TV series; I don't think this one's been adapted to the screen (yet), but look forward to reading it anyway.

Later: This was a real delight! It's from later in the series and features pretty much every single friend, ally, adopted child, and cohort in Phryne's expanded support-group, with most of them getting to play key roles in the investigation - and in defending the household against a very nasty foe. The story brings in Phryne's past during WWI, including ambulance service (with the reappearance of a beloved old friend from those days, with whom Phryne would love to dally - but who is in love with another man who seems to be treating him rather callously) and also with code-breaking (and contact with yet another former mentor). So yeah, there's a lot going on here - and I haven't even gotten to the Mendelssohn yet!

The main plot involves the death of the disliked conductor of an orchestral choir, leaving the artists and musicians at loose ends - though they handle their down time with aplomb (and some truly spectacular parties, to which Phryne is happy to attend). But the most deft musician - a lovely young man who is also a brilliant mathematician - is the one whom Phryne's old comrade John is in love with, and the ways in which Phryne attempts to awaken Rupert to John's many admirable traits is... um, well, rather extreme and more than a little fan-service-y, but as it seems to work I can go with it {wry grin}.

There's a lot going on here, but as ever the dialogue sparkles, the well-oiled machine that is Phryne's expanding household copes admirably with the rising threats, and Phryne's careful use of influence and diplomacy (and the occasional threat) manages to bring justice to some very bad people indeed. Great fun!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the books and the series, with some entertaining tidbits.]
