The fisherman David Baptiste is playing his guitar when he first meets the mermaid Aycayia. But then she is caught by American tourists who only care about the money they can make. David rescues her and takes her home where she starts to become a woman again, and he learns about how she was cursed. Aycayia befriends the deaf young son of Arcadia Rain, the lonely white woman who owns much of Black Conch. But the curse cannot be escaped so easily. I love this, as well as a mermaid it has so many elements of human life - a whole lot of detail including the language of life in the Caribbean, men's fear of the power of women, women's jealousy and hatred of each other, but most of all love, the love that makes David rescue Aycayia, the love of the deaf little boy for his friend, the love between Arcadia and her man Life who have been kept apart by money for so many years. Well worth reading.
