I found this book in this Little Free Library in Boxford MA while dropping off some books of my own. It's a rather grim novel set in a not-that-distant future, in which more and more species of birds and wildlife have gone extinct. Protagonist Franny is a difficult-to-like woman who's tended to spend her life dashing off into the wild - literally or figuratively - often leaving loved ones behind; here, though, she's attempting to finish the work of one of those loved ones by tracking the few surviving Arctic terns in hopes of locating a surviving colony. The story includes flashbacks and late-story revelations (that weren't all that surprising to me by that point), and a lot of heavy-handed but significant scenes regarding what the world might look like as the wildlife vanishes... I never did warm to the heroine of the book, despite the personal traumas that contributed to her remote demeanor, but I did find the story memorable.
