The thrilling historical whodunnit, apparently. I say apparently as I haven’t started reading Marston’s Christopher Redmayne series yet. However, I have read a great many of Marston’s other historical mysteries from other series, NICHOLAS BRACEWELL (England 1580/90s), the RAILWAY DETECTIVE (London 1850s), the HOME FRONT DETECTIVE (London 1915), the BOW STREET RIVALS (London 1815) and loved them all. Early this morning I noticed this on another Bookcrossers wishlist so decided to register this copy with BookCrossing as I have two copies of it. My first copy is, somewhere… amongst my book piles but this copy from Edinburgh Libraries is directly at hand! Hurrah!

Book burble: LONDON IS A VERITABLE CESSPOOL … A SWAMP OF CORRUPTION AND CRIME’

When Sir Julius Cheever’s son, a notorious rake, goes missing, and a blackmailer begins terrorising London’s most dissolute fops, it seems plausible that the two events and connected. Divided by politics but united in a desire to see justice done, Christopher Redmayne and Jonathan Bale must combine forces once again.

But how can they hope to find those who exploit the scandal of others, when the victims themselves will do anything to maintain their anonymity? And what of Sir Julius’s son? Most feel he must have been the victim of his own debauched appetites, but a few talk of his repentance. So where is the repentant rake? And, with only lies, rumours and gossip to work with, can Redmayne and Bale ever hope to find him?

It may be quite some time before I can read this and return here to add a review. Because so far as I recall, of the series I only have copies of books, two and three:
2. The Amorous Nightingale (2000)
3. The Repentant Rake (2001)
...and, of course, I'd prefer to start on the first in series The King's Evil.

I had enjoyed " the frost fair" and " the painted lady" very much, so I am looking forward to this one. Thank you also for the bookmarks. I especially like the one with the skull.
