from back:
"Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve he is singled ou to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now it's time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back . . ."

I love this book. I've read it many times and every time I am just dumbfounded at the stupidity of these people. How can they live without color and still be happy? It is beyond me. Great book.

What a great book! It is one of those ones that I will remember for a long time, I might even have to get my own copy to read it again, I am sure I will get more out of it the second time around.
Wouldn't it be awful to live in a society like Jonas's without pain, colour or memories and where everyone has to conform to the norm? I did like the concept of sharing your feelings with your family as a daily routine, something that I think would help many people.
The ending was one of those ones that leave you thinking, and was perfect for a book like this.

Thanks Czersk for sharing this, I have Katayoun's address and will get it posted shortly.

yes, the ending definitely left me thinking and i would be hoping to see what others will make of it.
the society was strange, though the leaving of the memories behind is not such a strange thing, i think it's done as a regular basis and hence all the war and killings in the world, i think that if we had retained memories of the previous wars there would have been less of it right now.
as to the colors, well, there are alot of days that we are rushing so much, or cooped up in the offices that we don't get to see anything. thank god for the tress you always notince them :) and then feelings, well sometimes the feelings are also becoming mixed up, like the "anger" felt by lily, i think that there are many a day that we feel such an anger, something that does not merit the name and heat of the anger, while we pass over the real issues of famine and war and cannot spare them any feelings.... the exaggeration and the putting down in words of what i might be doing right now, certainly made me think and hopefully my memory would retain this ...umm the givers in our society the writers, the artists, the painters,....? i wonder.

well this book is ready to be mailed to weeblet and i'll mail it in a couple of days. will journal after i mail it and thanks alot Czersk for a lovely ring and also thanks boreal, the card is also lovely and i'll send it on for other to enjoy and wish they were there in the cold winter :)

My daughter saw that I was reading this book and gave me such a disgusted look and said that I shouldn't read it because it was so boring...but I was surprised that despite the fact that she read it several years ago for school, she remembered so much about it...couldn't have been that dull since she retained so much of it, huh? I really enjoyed it. I find it intriguing to read books in this nature, following the lines of 1984 and A Brave New World. It's fascinating to wonder what it would be like to live in a world where our lives are controlled by outside sources. The community here had little choices. They couldn't even see colors because the elders had decided some time ago that there should be Sameness in everything. And yet, they didn't seem to suffer from it because that's the only life they knew. In fact, when beginning to be introduced to something different, Jonas saw harm in having other choices and worried about it. He was excited about the colors but yet at the same time, his first thoughts were how wrong it was to interrupt the Sameness.

I don't want to say too much about this story, as it is a short book and a very quick read for an adult...saying too much about the plot will just make it less enjoyable for the reader. I do recommend reading it; it will give you a better appreciation for the things we have and the choices we are allowed to make in our own lives. My only disappointment with this book was that it didn't continue on. I would have liked to see how the community dealt with things later on.
