Headed out in the Animals Bookbox (Lion)
One of my choices from the Animals Bookbox. Thank you!
My book club chose "any biography" for this month's book so was happy to have this on my shelf already. I would say that I had only previously known Bert Lahr's work from The Wizard of Oz movie, but learned from this biography that he got his start in burlesque and vaudeville, and had his biggest successes in musical comedy Broadway shows, not in movies. The cowardly lion's persona in the movie is an amalgamation of comic mannerisms, phrases, and wise-cracks perfected by Lahr during his years in the footlights, instantly recognizable to the audience in 1939 as 100% Lahr. Although written by his son, John Lahr, the biography does manage to be fairly objective in that we are allowed to see both the highs and lows-- the brilliant talent alongside the insecurities; the wit, the perfectionism, and the flaws of a complex man. The appendix includes several scripts from some of his best known "bits"; like anything else, not all the humor there has necessarily aged well, but if nothing else is a record of its time. Thank you for sharing this interesting read.
