An extremely moving book about a young boy growing up in the Glasgow schemes. As his mother drifts further into alcoholism and self-destruction, his father abandons the family and young Shuggie, never fitting in at school, is the one who is left to be the carer. Very well written, the characters come to life and you hope and hope for things to get better. A deserved winner of the Booker Prize.
