To be released as part of the Around the World Bookbox - category North America (Canada). I flipped through many of the entries, and they're entirely delightful. Enjoy!

I'm claiming this hefty hardcover from the Around the World bookbox. I've read several works by Davies, but somehow had not encountered his "Samuel Marchbanks" columns; this looks hilarious!

Later: Oh, this was fun! Best read in small snippets due to the style, but very entertaining - a kind of quirky 1940s-era Samuel Pepys, jotting down the movies he's seen, the meals he had, the antics of his kitten, and more, with passages that wax poetic or philosophical, and others that are pretty tart.

Not all the items are in the form of diary entries; some are presented as very short essays, "On the Depravity of Bees" or "Of Curative Groaning", etc. [That last one reminded me of Jerome K. Jerome, who would share the author's opinion I suspect.] There's another section framed as answers to letters, for a little more variety. They all include dry humor, comments on the passing of time, changes in Canadian culture, popular stage actors of the day, and more. Very entertaining!
