This was an entertaining urban fantasy story. I wasn't sure during the opening chapter, feeling a little wary about the apparently impending romantic drama, but I thought the author actually did a nice job balancing components of romance, mystery, humor, and fantasy. It's not a book that takes itself too seriously, and that helps a lot. In that way, it kind of reminds me of a cozy mystery. No matter what horrible deeds are being done off-screen, it's approached with a lightness that is a bit disconcerting in retrospect, but works in the moment.

The author also did a good job managing an ambiguous character who turns out to a baddie. (I won't give away details and spoil the next reader!) At their intro, I felt skeptical about them, but as our heroine befriends them and we think we get to know them, I kind of forgot my initial misgivings. It made their later betrayal a great example of a twist that I was kicking myself for falling for!
