It was enjoyable to read at first but it soon palled. The story is sad and I didn't feel like the main character's redemption was truly redeeming. There was an immaturity in the story, it really all boiled down to sex. Not just the mother of his friend, but his sister in law stripping down in front of him (and everyone according to her son), what was that? Why? Writing masturbation slander about the coach in his book, Why? And the two gay friends; one commits suicide after being shunned by his shit friend Joe, and the other is dying of Aids when Joe returns to town but Joe is redeemed by caring for his friend while said friend is dying. Here is an idea: Joe's fall from the Falls kills him and his friend who is dying of Aids gets well, marries his high school boyfriend who hadn't died after all, and the whole town comes to the wedding and celebrates.
