I like Kate Mosse's books, she writes well about the Cathars and a region of France I am very familiar with. This story hovers between time travel and encounters with ghosts in the Pyrenees: quite an exciting account though I have some reservations: too many similes and metaphors (on one page the coarse rush matting sighs under the narrator's feet, then he sits in a chair and the leather sighs beneath his weight... And though the narrator admits to speaking only "adequate" French, how can he have such a lengthy and involved conversation with Fabrissa, who certainly would not know any English.
And the literary conceit of recounting a story to someone, but the story is the narrative of the book, and includes a secondary verbatim narrative about an encounter with someone, is not convincing.

This is a paperback, so it irked me to read the acknowledgements to the artist for the wonderful illustrations, as there aren't any.

But, on the whole, very enjoyable.
