I somehow doubted the basic plot; the (fictive) count Rostov gets detained by the bolsheviks for being a social parasite and is sentenced to life long house arrest in a luxury hotel. Imagine, the Bolsheviks! ... who tend to send their prisoners to Siberia ... It sounds very much like a fairy tale.
The fairy tale is confined to Moscow's Metropole Hotel. Whilst outside the revolution is going on and Lenin on the rise, our count worries about the wine choice. Count Rostov strikes up friendships with the staff, with other guests and the splendid, gorgeous, sparkling life under chandeliers goes on, hardly touched by the turmoils outside. It might be a charming when also slightly boring story - reminded me a bit on Menschen im Hotel by Vicki Baum - but it could play anywhere, in Paris, Geneva, Berlin; it's not a specifically Russian story.
I don't know what the American author has to do with Russia. However I guess he likes very much old grand hotels. Why he chose to set his story into Moscow in midst of the Bolshevik uprising is beyond me.
