I got this hardcover from Better World Books, intrigued by the concept: an alternate-reality tale in which music is used to control the populace, preventing them from acquiring memories and keeping them tranquil. The descriptions of this are lyrical - at first - with lavish and beautiful sound-imagery, but as protagonist Simon begins to find his way in the city, it becomes clear that things are terribly wrong. Simon's new-found family of street scavengers - including the enigmatic Lucien, who's blind and who has amazing abilities with music - help him, but also make him vulnerable...
Despite the unusual setup and the poetic prose, I didn't get as involved in the story as I'd hoped. I was pleased to find that Simon and Lucien managed to hold on to each other, though the cost was high...
