Los Angeles 1936. Kay Fischer, a young, ambitious architect, is shadowed by Salvador Carriscant, an enigmatic stranger claiming to be her father. Within weeks of their first meeting, Kay will join him for an extraordinary journey into the old man's past, initially in search of a murderer, but finally in celebration of a glorious, undying love.
Well, this went off in directions I certainly wasn’t expecting! One thing about William Boyd is that all his books are quite different. He certainly knows how to spin a good yarn, and he certainly writes well. But unfortunately this book is made up of so many disparate parts that it didn’t quite all hold together as a whole. Some bits were, while interesting, not really relevant, and came across as more like padding. The story also has to be more believable than this one was in order to garner higher marks. But it was mostly enjoyable and took me to a place and time about which I know little, so I went along for the ride.
Off to jeniwren as a choice from the OZ VBB.
Another Boyd for my collection :)
