I finished reading Oryx And Crake a few days ago. I put off making a journal entry because I was so enamored with the book that I figured a time lapse was neccessary to be objective. It changed nothing. This book is as brilliant a piece of literature as any I have read in quite some time. Atwood takes the reader by the scuff of the neck, shows him what he does not want to see and makes him want to think about it.
This is the best Dystopian novel I have ever read.

Thanks jmg49 :) I know this is popular right now, so it will go along to a new home soon.
I'll journal again in a week or so when I've read it.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through this and have to admit I'm enjoying it very much...I wasn't so sure I would from the opening pages..I was thinking it would be too "far out there" for me...but I am finding Snowman to be very real and human after all :)

(This is promised to bluenoser next!)

Still reading this...for some reason it seemed to falter for one or two chapters and I put the book down for weeks...when I picked it up again today, I couldn't stop reading!!! Snowman has an incredible story to tell..or is it a prediction. Will journal again when I've finished - I have absolutely no idea where Atwood is going with this novel!

Journal Entry 7 by wingcestmoiwing from Hamilton, Ontario Canada on Saturday, September 11, 2004
Finished reading early this morning. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down again!

When I read JMG49's entry I knew I had a vague idea of what the word dystopia meant but wasn't completely sure, I rushed to look it up..then thought I will read the novel first so the definition doesn't colour my perception of it.

I knew Utopia is an ideal place/lifestyle so I toyed with the idea that dystopia was a dysfunctional utopia..something that was meant to be perfect but didn't function the way it was supposed to.

Having read the novel, I can see I wasn't far wrong....however the Merriam-Webster definition of dystopia is:

Main Entry: dys·to·pia
Pronunciation: (")dis-'tO-pE-&
Function: noun
Etymology: New Latin, from dys- + -topia (as in utopia)
1 : an imaginary place where people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives

This makes much more sense - especially in terms of Crake and Jimmy and their lives before the chaos...but funnily enough, its the Crakers with their innocence and naivete who are living utopian lives while Snowman is living the dystopian nightmare.

Thanks for sharing this with me JMG49. I'm going to send it off to bluenoser when she returns from her "European Tour", in about 3 weeks.

The "pièce de resistence". Yet another from my wish list. This scoots straight to the top of my TBR. I was on a bookray for this but the 'ray died just before it reached me. As soon as I've read this it will be off to the 2 other BookCrossers after me on that 'ray.
Thank you so much cestmoi.

I wasn't disappointed. A good read not just for the imagination and style, but the story is exciting, scary and sad too. It's the kind of book that keeps you awake, thinking in the dark! It really makes you wonder about the future of cloning and genetic engineering. Next time you about to munch into a bacon sandwich think about the pigoons - how close would that be to cannibalism?
I'm going up to Halifax in a couple of weeks and will take this with me for my daughter "chantelly". I'm sure she'll enjoy it.
Thanks cestmoi.

Got it back from chantelly. I noticed she didn't write a journal entry but I happen to know she really liked it (as I knew she would). She's really busy at work right now as well as being pregnant with my next grandchild!

Tuz, chantelly and I were in a bookray for this book, but unfortunately it stalled before it reached us. Cestmoi was kind enough to send it to me, I read it and chantelly has read it, so I figured it was only fair to send it off to Tuz in Brazil. Chantelly apologises for the beet juice stain on the top edge - her lunchbox leaked! It left this morning by surface mail.

It arrived yesterday, thanks!
