Review: Beach Music (Pat Conroy). This enormous book was a holiday present from my dear friend Harriet and the second book I have read by Pat Conroy. I took it along on a recent trip to Kansas, put it aside to read a different book which I wanted to leave with my sister-in-law, then picked it up again, so even if it was long, it didn’t really take as long as indicated to finish. He is such a good writer. The story was almost too sprawling, however, as there were stories within stories as we follow the life of Jack McCall, born and bred in South Carolina, but living with his young daughter Leah in Rome after swearing off his life in the South after the suicide of his wife Shyla and the hurtful aftermath visited upon him by his in-laws. Ultimately, however, it is the story of a group of teenage friends and the forces of history which molded them and their parents before them, with the Holocaust and the Vietnam War as key players. It is a book rich in authenticity, sweetness, horror and family drama with characters hard to forget.
