Review: Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 (Cho Nam-Joo) This is one of the books recommended by my TBR (Tailored Book Recommendations), and it was also on my wish list. Korea has interested me mostly because of my daughter, but I am always pretty happy delving into another culture. This quite slim volume packs a powerful punch. Its third-person "omniscient" voice is more than you suspect until the end, and the footnotes which are truly giving sources for some of the statistics about the status of women in Korea form an odd element to the fictionalized story, but also dare you to not believe the comments. Jiyoung is only 2 years older than my daughter, and of a different culture, and yet her reality as a female in a still mostly patriarchal mindset society make all the elements of her experience mirror our own culture and my own experiences as a baby-boomer female, too: "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose", indeed. I admired Jiyoung's mother, so traditional in many ways, but also fiercely intervening from time to time to encourage her daughter to "run wild"...at least until it was no longer possible. The reality of the work world, so enticing and yet so often demeaning, made me sad. In spite of some men in her life truly wanting to be supportive, the conflicts in the current societal frame generally make it a life of frustration for women all too often. Still, I felt such an urge to care about this fictional young woman and her struggles that clearly the book is a gem. Rich for discussion.
