From the back cover:"It is the autumn of 1943, and life is becoming increasingly perilous for Italian Jews like the Mazin family. With Nazi Germany now occupying most of her beloved homeland, and the threat of imprisonment and deportation growing ever more certain, Antonina Mazin has but one hope to survive - - she must leave Venice and her parents and hide in the countryside with a man she has only just met. Niccolo Gerardi was studying for the priesthood until a wartime tragedy forced him to leave the seminary to run his family's farm. A moral and just man, he refuses to remain a bystander to Nazi atrocities. Rather than allow Nina to risk a perilous escape across the mountains, he offers her shelter. To keep her safe and protect secrets of his own, however, Nico and Nina must convice everyone, his own family included, that they are married and in love."
Passed this book on as a controlled release to my sister, Maranlin. We both enjoy reading the historical fiction novels written by Canadian author Jennifer Robson.

This book has been very kindly loaned to me by my sister, starrdust. Jennifer Robson has become a favourite author of mine. Thank you so much for sharing!
I have to say that as much as I love Jennifer Robson's books, this one is not one of my favourites. However, having said that, it is well written, and lots of research was done. It is always interesting to read the author's notes at the back of the book which detail how she came to write the novel. Jennifer's husband is of Italian heritage, and she learned much about life during WWII in the small town of his ancestors by listening to the memories of his relatives while on a trip there several years ago. These are only memories of others since his grandparents are no longer alive to give first hand accounts. This is the first historical fiction set in WWII in Italy that I have read, so that was interesting.
I have decided not to go into detail about my feelings for the story, as I think those thoughts would be "spoilers" and I am aware that starrdust has yet to read this book! I may add to this entry after she has read it.

I am returning this book to my sister, starrdust. Thank you so much for sharing!
Received this book back from my sister, Maranlin today. I look forward to reading it and sharing my views and thoughts on this historical fiction with her.
