I read this book several years ago, so I don't have a very clear memory of it. I do remember that I was really impressed with Hiaasen's books and I think the reviewer who claims reading his work is "a bit like being on a terrifyingly good roller-coaster" has got it right. They books I have read before have all been very funny; perhaps they could be described as savagely funny. They also reflect a side of Florida that is very different from the one most people think of.

This book involves the apparent theft of the last two blue-tongued voles from a Florida theme park and PR man Joe Winder's mistake in asking questions about it. This leads him to hide out in the Everglades with some very strange companions.

The cover differs from that shown.

Very kindly sent to me by Librarie in Norway - she saw it was on my wishlist and offered it to me.

Thanks very much Librarie - and the Norwegian postcard was lovely! It was fabulous to come home after a hard day at work and open a package to find not only a book I had wanted to read for a long time, but also a picture of the most beautiful scenery.

I hope you don't have TOO long a wait for the book I sent you:)

Fantastic - this is classic Hiaasen. There is a crusading and idealistic journalist who has none the less got a dark side, a morally bankrupt theme park boss trying hard to hide his former Mob connections, a slimy PR man and a former Governor of Florida turned wild man of the Everglades.
Hiaasen is amazingly inventive and darkly funny - and his recurring use of environmental themes shows he is a man with a message, too.

Thanks so much, Librarie, for sending me this. It's much appreciated.
