Moloka'i

Rachel is a spirited 7-year-old Hawaiian girl with dreams of traveling when her world changes and she's sent to quarantine in a leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka'i.
I took this book from a Little Free Library which was VERY full and in disorder when I arrived today, with books piled higgledy-piggledy and a torn paper sack of books at the base. I didn't have time to do a wonderful job of it, but I did straighten a little and put all of the books onto the shelves instead of out where they could collect rain & snow. Sometimes I leave more books than I take but since this was so full, I traded 2 for 2 today, and this one looks very interesting.

An interesting story with good characters and insights into a time and place I know little about. There was the risk that it would be schmalty and overly sentimental but I thought it avoided that for the most part.
I'm counting this for Hawaii in the Pacific region for the 666 Around the World Reading Challenge.

Thank you so very much for sharing this book with me . I am looking forward to reading it. I am so thankful for you, a generous friend.
The author did a good job of taking the reader into the leprosy camp. I can’t imagine as a child being torn away from your parents to live with strangers or as a parent having your child taken away from you. The author took us from the 1800s up till 1970. My deepest respect for the nurses, nuns, doctors, and others who put themselves at risk to help people with a disease that little was known about. I am going to send this to another Bookcrosser who has it on her wish list as a surprise.
What a delightful surprise, once again, to find a book off my wishlist in my mailbox! It looks lovely, and I hope to get to it soon indeed! An end of summer smile, thanks to booklady 331... and with nice little surprises throughout, as usual! Hope your summer is unwinding well!
