Apparently mixed reviews for this. I had heard about it and wanted to read it, and then saw a friend reading it who offered to lend it to me when finished. Recently she gave it to me, saying she couldn't finish it. Others I know liked it. We shall see.

I'm not sure where I first heard about this, but I knew I wanted to read it. Several months ago I saw it at a friend's house and mentioned I would love to borrow it when she was done. A few months later, she gave it to me, saying she had not been able to read it.
I keep wondering what it is that put her off.
I found the book fascinating and moving. The structure, moving from character to character, was occasionally irksome when I had to wrack my brain to remember who so and so was again... but it was nonetheless effective.
The penultimate scene, at the after party, did bring almost all the various characters back into the same room, but because of this vine like structure, there was a distancing between the characters which was exacerbated by this sense of "moving on now". I would have liked the opportunity to read an updated interaction between the characters - Yazz and Amma, for example - or any of the others. Interestingly enough, the only sketch of that is between Amma and Dominique, with whom we began. Looping the loop.
The end of the epilogue touched me deeply. I am now on the look out for other books by this author.

January 2022 update.
I just reread this because our book group was slated to discuss it. I thought I had remembered it well and could skim, but it turned out that I needed to reread it all. It seems too that I didn't remember liking it as well as I did. Reading my review from April/May I realized I had indeed appreciated this book a lot, and if anything I enjoyed it more this time.
The book club discussion last night was lively despite technical difficulties signing into our zoom meeting. Some opted to forego trying to keep the various family and other relationships straight, but read it more like a series of short stories. I did a pretty good job of keeping everything clear in my head (and in my notes, prep for the meeting).
The abuser/abusee issue was one point of discussion, and many felt the last three stories were the most captivating. Several of us agreed that the part about pronoun choice was both relevant and helpful, and we marvelled at how apparently easily the younger generation are able to adopt the new pronouns, whereas some of us struggle with the erstwhile plural they.
Penelope made me think of Maggie Smith in the Marigold Hotel series, and we had a spin-off discussion about ancestry and DNA researches and the value of it. (Some in the group had done it, others contemplated it, I think only one person was dead-set against it).
A good and thought-provoking read.
