River Cross My Heart

This is a great, historical and cultural book. I enjoyed learning about some of the "old-wives' tales" and traditions of the black families in Georgetown. I was impressed and strengthened by each individual's ability to - not just handle the conditions - but to become greater than them. Ms. Clarke allows readers to get inside the heads of many of the characters and listen to their thoughts, fears, hopes, and dreams. Suddenly, my own troubles seemed pretty trivial.
I would have rated the book higher, but I felt like the ending was somewhat abrupt. I would have liked more resolution for some of the situations. Overall, it was a joy to read.
