Interesting book from the point of view of Keiko, a 36 year old woman who has been working for years in a convenience store in Tokyo.

This book is good at the art of 'show, don't tell'.

Ik heb dit boek gekregen na aanleiding van een post op Facebook. Het boek draait om Keiko (wat gelukkig betekent), een vrouw van 36 die niet goed met de wereld kan omgaan en handvaten vindt in haar werk bij een convenience store. Daar werkt ze al 18 jaar parttime, waar ze erg gelukkig van wordt, werk en een omgeving die ze snapt. Maar haar familie, haar vrienden, de medewerkers in de convenience store, zien allemaal een andere toekomst voor haar, een echte baan en een relatie!

Dit boek is echt zo Japans, ik was er gelijk weer terug, vanaf de eerste zin ongeveer. Dat komt ook door de wereld van de convenience store, die echt subliem beschreven wordt. In het Nederlands heet dit boek 'buurtsupermens', maar zelfs buurtsupermarkt is niet echt een omschrijving van wat een convenience store is. Er is veel meer te koop dan in onze buurtsupermarkten.

Conveniencestore woman is een feministische roman, over het doorbreken van conformisme en mannelijke en vrouwelijke rolpatronen, die in Japan nog meer ingesleten zijn dan hier. Maar uiteindelijk is keiko gewoon gelukkig in haar werk in de convenience store, en haar zoektocht naar dat geluk maakt dit boek eigenlijk stiekem een romantische komedie, waarbij ik aan het eind tussen Keiko en haar convenience store hetzelfde gevoel had dan als mensen elkaar uiteindelijk vinden bij de incheckbalie van het vliegveld.

A quirky and interesting read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I finished it a couple of weeks ago and only noticed now when I came to update the entry to reserve the book that I have forgotten to journal.

It is nice to see that the book, which started here in Groningen, has taken a trip via Utrecht to Canada, in order to travel back to Dalfsen which is only 100 km from here :-)
