"Nana is on a road trip, but he is not sure where he is going. All that matters is that he can sit beside his beloved owner Satoru in the front seat of his silver van. Satoru is keen to visit three old friends from his youth, though Nana doesn’t know why and Satoru won’t say.

Set against the backdrop of Japan’s changing seasons and narrated with a rare gentleness and striking humour, Nana’s story explores the wonder and thrill of life’s unexpected detours. It is about the value of friendship and solitude, and knowing when to give and when to take. Above all, it shows how acts of love, both great and small, can transform our lives."

A lovely, nice book - and I don't tend to enjoy lovely and nice!

Any animal lover will understand the emotions that course through this story - and we all hope that our animals truly love us in the same way that Nana does Satoru. The writing is great and draws you through the story, swapping viewpoints between friends of Satoru and from Nana himself.

Like all 'animal' stories, it seems that a sad ending is inevitable, although there is a definite sense of hope and enlightenment in the last few pages.

I just don’t know what to say about this book. I was frustrated by the simplicity, nay childish style, yet came on board for the emotional conclusion. Cosy.

Thank you. Apologies this arrived last week along with another half dozen book parcels so had to ignore them for a while.

This is a cat autobiography and it has achieved what feels like a very realistic and gently humorous glimpse into the feline mind. I'm not sure if this is meant to be for young-teen readers or if the translation lead to very simple language and short sentences but becomes a moral fable and quite moving towards the end. It may have started a little slow but it was also tenderly delicate and revealed a lovely, peaceful, stress-free journey through a life seen through the eyes of a wise cat. Essentially this is a story about love, connection and collecting memories.

This is a sweet little story about Nana, a stray cat, but also about Satoru, the man who takes him in. As Satoru takes Nana to visit each of his childhood friends, we learn a little more about his story. It's a book about friendship and kindness, about caring for others, and as more of Satoru's story is revealed it's really quite touching. (Also we just lost our cat a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't stop crying at the end of the book.)

I found this book thoroughly charming, and the final chapters brought tears to my eyes. My only complaint was that the writing seemed a little weak in places, but that could be a fault of the translation. In any case, it wasn't enough to mar my enjoyment of the story.

Thank you, Fifna, for offering this book to the roundabout!

A very sweet book! Just the ticket during these stressful times! Off to Paulanni.

Journal Entry 27 by wingPaulanniwing at Riihimäki, Kanta-Häme / Egentliga Tavastland Finland on Monday, October 18, 2021
The book arrived today together with its travel companion. I read this in a Finnish translation a couple of years ago and I just loved it. Also had tears in my eyes at the end. I want to revisit it as I have it in my hands now and to see if it still feels as charming as when I first read it.

Edit Dec. 12: I have decided to send this on without rereading it as I have too many books waiting to travel. I read it in Finnish in June 2019 and wrote in my book blog: The book is "a quick and charming read about cats, life's surprises, death and, above all, friendship. It is light reading, but touches deep things."

We are a cat friendly family ( like many readers) with a private WattsApp where we share mischief and cuteness. I know, it's bad for the climate.

I intentionally skipped reading reviews, and now have half a mind to call in sick tomorrow as my eyes are so swollen from crying towards the end.

My only gripe is a small one: cute as it is, the cat on the book cover is NOT Nana!
