Guy Gavriel Kay is unparalleled in the field of historical fantasy. His characters are the next best thing to real people; the line between 'good guys' and 'bad guys' is blurred at best. I highly recommend Tigana, an outstanding and deeply touching story that transcends fantasy to speak of what it means to be human.
