This is another of those layered, deceptively deep books that Marian Keyes does so well: an unreliable narrator, if you like; certainly one who's hiding a lot for herself. Unfortunately, I didn't much enjoy spending time in the narrator's head while she came to terms with herself and what she'd done, and, while the book had its funny moments and its profound ones, it was ultimately a bit of a slog.

Thank you riffraff71! I like a bit of Marian Keyes. Her books are long, but very readable.

Haha, after reading elstaplador's review I was expecting something much twistier and surprising. I kept waiting for a big reveal to show the unreliable narration, but it never came. (In my view, there were lots of hints towards a particular plot twist, and I was kind of disappointed it didn't happen in the end!)
The Break is much subtler in its journey than many of Keyes' novels. There is dawning self-realisation by the central character, but it has nowhere near as much drama as Rachel's Holiday or This Charming Man for example.
I did like enjoy reading it. The characters were engaging and often funny. I particularly liked the subplot involving Amy's mum becoming a social media star. But it is - like quite a few of Keyes' books - far too long-winded. You could easily cut out a quarter without harming the story in my opinion.
