It came! really happy to have this book, the cover is beautiful, if I'd seen it on a shelf I'd have picked it up. Looking forward to reading it, and wishing I was in Newcastle with bookcrossing friends. Thank you so much Poodlesister!

It was wonderful to spend some time with Taylor and her adopted daughter Turtle from "The Bean Trees", and discover the truth about Turtle's background, how and why she was abandoned. Apart from the enthralling story and the insights into the Cherokee Nation, the writing is beautiful, and emotional - I was often close to tears, and sometimes laughed out loud. The characters all seem very real and I loved them all (apart from the interfering and righteous Annawake Fourkiller though I did warm a little towards her at the end - oh, and the dreadful Barbie) but especially Taylor's mother Alice and her wry opinions about men - she leaves her husband because she realises he has abandoned her for the TV - I wanted to be her.

So far, my favourite Kingsolver. I'd like to read it again, one day.

Alice: "If men only knew, modesty makes women fallin love faster than all the cock-a-doodling in the world."
