Journal Entry 1 by JessicaEby from Cambridge, Ontario Canada on Friday, June 12, 2020
I picked this book up at a local charity shop as I am looking for immigration stories to share as part of a small mass release I'm planning. My husband found this one for me. I don't recall having heard of it before, although it seems to be well-known and acclaimed.

From writing inside the cover, it looks like this book has been shared before; this is what's written inside, in two different scripts:

LL-- good read-Canadian content
ML-- difficult to get into

So it seems like this book is coming to me with mixed reviews. I'll be sure to add my thoughts to this journal once I've read the book.

Obviously I did not end up reading/using this for my release in the summer of 2020, but I have read it now as part of the 6/6/6 Around the World Reading Challenge for 2021. This book is set in a few different countries, but I plan to count it for Greece.

Unfortunately, I think I have to agree with ML that this book was hard to get into. I found some of the factual aspects of the book interesting (the history, the scientific stuff) and the general storyline is one that I could see myself getting into... but I think the author's style is just not one that I enjoyed reading. I've just found out that this book was adapted into a movie, and I think I would consider watching it since it seems to be the literary style that wasn't a good fit for me, but we'll see. I find it a little hard to imagine in movie form.

Anyway, hopefully the book will find another reader who is more into it in the future!
