From Amazon:
The controller stood back.
‘Right,’ he said. ‘Spin ’em!’
The man flipped the piece of wood and the coins spun up into the air above his head and dropped down on to the carpet.
There was silence.
Wake in Fright tells the tale of John Grant’s journey into an alcoholic, sexual and spiritual nightmare. It is the original and the greatest outback horror story. Bundanyabba and its citizens will forever haunt its readers.

From my Goodreads review: Wow, it is so enthralling to read literature after churning through so many current fiction books. This book is so well written in terms of character, settings, storyline and themes. It is a dark story of hopelessness and in my experience truely reflects so many aspects of the Australian remote experience and culture. I really appreciated that the book ends in hope, even though that hope has a little gentle cynicism attached. I would like to watch the movie and see if it translated equally well into film. Definitely a great read!
