"Nothing links person to person like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book."

I read this book as a 4S Ranch Library book group selection. Everyone seemed to enjoy the story -- we had a great discussion on the various characters and on the weirdness of Eleanor.

This story stars a particularly odd character. Eleanor comes across initially as highly quirky and unable to interpret social cues and situations. She is very alone. She has significant scarring on her face and hands that causes people to stare. She is about 30 years old and works in an office, but she has made no friends there. As the story begins, a few events occur that cause her to be in situations outside her experience and comfort zone, and the effects snowball from there. Eleanor follows a path of self-discovery that leads her and the reader to understand why she is the way she is. My entire book group enjoyed this story and found much to discuss. Eleanor is a very unique character, different than most I have encountered. The story is set in Glasgow, which had me looking up unfamiliar things like Magners and Irn-Bru (which I now want to taste). In the end, Eleanor learns her own story and also discovers what a positive difference it makes in her life to open herself and make friends.

The writing/story-telling was quite adept. Maybe I'll have the chance to read more from this author. Right now I think this is her first and only book.

A wandering book -- the karma of literature!
