On its way to UK. Enjoy !

Thank you, I've not read anything by this author before and I'm looking forward to reading it. As my TBR pile is massive it may take me a while to get to it :-)

Although written in the seventies, this is a really good story, very descriptive and well written. I would read more in this series if it came my way.

Going into The World of Crime bookbox.

Leaving in the World of Crime Bookbox.

Changed my mind and took this out of Plumb-crazy's WORLD OF CRIME BOOK BOX, Round Four. Preparing the box for travel again, it's been in my hands for so long for a variety of reasons. High time it was winging its way though the post again.

Pg. 33. "...he tried to ignore the purported Veal Cordon Bleu on the menu, knowing that it would be in some major way a disappointment. Long ago McGarr had learned to avoid the pretensions of most Irish country resturants, but the rest of the fare seemed to be only mixed grill, mutton, fried fish and chips, Irish boiled dinner, or round steak, and after debate he succumbed to the temptation."
Spoiler: "How the Cook could have allowed such fine scallops of milk-fed veal to scorch amazed McGarr." So the dreaded disapointment was encountered as feared. However, my puzzlement centered on what exactly is meant by the unappetising sounding, "Irish boiled dinner" and what on earth is a "round steak"? Can only assume, without research, typical 1970s culinary terms, now defunct?
Pg. 268 "Bartholomew Gill, one of mystery's most beloved authors, wrote the informative, unfailingly entertaining, and widely acclaimed series featuring Peter McGarr. McGarr is the hard-nosed chief superintendent of the Dublin police who is regularly called upon when a puzzling and brutal crime occurs in Ireland. His investigations take him around the atmospheric country" [and while] "investigating each crime" McGarr provides an authentic look at the charms, challenges and fascinating contradictions that exist in present-day Ireland." (NB ref to present-day, the books copyright is" 1978 by Mark McGarrity". "A graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, Mr Gill wrote as Mark McGarrity for the Newark Star-Ledger and passed away in 2002."
A short author biography is followed by five snappy excerpts from different novels in the Peter McGarr Mystery series;
The Death of An Irish Politician,
The Death of An Irish Sea Wolf,
The Death of An Irish Tinker,
The Death of An Irish Lover,
The Death of An Irish Sinner.

Oops, prepping controlled release notes for this book and see my reading notes are not as yet translated out of my sort-of-shorthand scribbles and added above. OK will work on them, meanwhile, I am applying a plastic film to the cover as it is brittle and in danger of fragmenting. Please forgive me plastic haters, but the film will protect the book and allowing it to be handled safely means it can continue circulating!
I've selected the next reader for this so am marking it as reserved.
