The uplifting true story of the couple who lost everything and embarked on a journey of salvation across the windswept South West coastline.

'A beautiful book, it really lives up to the hype . . . an enjoyable, gentle yet moving read' Pandora Sykes on The High Low

GUARDIAN BEST BOOKS OF SUMMER

Just days after Raynor learns that Moth, her husband of 32 years, is terminally ill, their home is taken away and they lose their livelihood. With nothing left and little time, they make the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path, from Somerset to Dorset, via Devon and Cornwall.

Carrying only the essentials for survival on their backs, they live wild in the ancient, weathered landscape of cliffs, sea and sky. Yet through every step, every encounter and every test along the way, their walk becomes a remarkable journey.

The Salt Path is an honest and life-affirming true story of coming to terms with grief and the healing power of the natural world. Ultimately, it is a portrayal of home, and how it can be lost, rebuilt and rediscovered in the most unexpected ways.

There is a lot of description of landscape but in regard to the initial premise I would have preferred more reflection and emotional/philosophical exploration in the book. However it was an interesting choice in how to reset your life after traumatic events.

I have no idea how I would cope if I was suddenly made homeless and my partner was diagnosed with a terminal illness, but Raynor Winn and husband Moth jumped right in to an adventure walking the south coast park. Perhaps adventure is the wrong word, it seems they had few choices without being able to secure social security and with student children unable to assist them.
A very descriptive story which highlighted the shocking weather and the constant lack of any money. The story was less about the scenery as confronting the future as they drifted along as Summer drew to a close.
An uplifting ending when they finally were able to look past their current situation, and Moth applied for and won a student scholarship and also a stranger generously offered this homeless couple accommodation.
Upon doing some research, it was good to see that Moth was still alive in August 2021 and had also completed his degree.

I expected to love The Salt Path. It's an epic tale of a journey undertaken in desperation, with the dramatic coastline of the South West Coast path as a backdrop. It's a true story about folk who are having a pretty bad time. It should be good. Parts certainly were and I definitely enjoyed some of it. However other bits left me cold or worse.

So I have been meaning to read this book for ages and suddenly here it is on the meetup table. Obviously I did what anyone would and snapped it up. Then I get home and well this is certainly a well-travelled book! Hard to believe as it is in near-perfect condition, so well done to all of you bookcrossers who read it before me, you clearly take very good care of books. No surprise there, really. On Mt TBR it goes.

I had heard so much about that book that maybe my expectations were set too high. It's a great story to tell and it's set in a beautiful scenic part of the UK. Yet the start immediately reminded me of Eat, Pray, Love which is not a good thing. It could be the writing, but somehow the story and the journey of self-discovery did not win me over, even though it must have been a tough ordeal. And as in one of the previous comments, I would have liked more introspection. Still it made me want to visit the British SW Coast again (maybe even walk it if I find the time in future!) so there must be something in it! Oh and I just love the cover.
