En el año 532 antes de Cristo, el rey persa Cambises envió un ejército de cincuenta mil hombres al oasis de Siwa para destruir el oráculo de Amón. Mientras cruzaban el desierto occidental de Egipto, aquellos soldados y mercenarios fueron alcanzados por una tormenta de arena, y nada más se supo de ellos.
