Wonderful summary of the history of the United States. Far from the official history on heroic men and liberty, Zinn provides a more coherent narrative that helps understand the past and predict the future.

"Around 1776, certain important people in the English colonies made a discovery that would prove enormously useful for the next two hundred years. They found that by creating a nation, a symbol, a legal unity called the United States, they could take over land, profits, and political power from favorites of the British Empire. In the process, they could hold back a number of potential rebellions and create a consensus of popular support for the rule of a new, privileged leadership."

"...the Declaration of Independence, even by its own language, was limited to life, liberty, and happiness for white males..."

Journal Entry 4 by webosfritos at Gijón, Asturies/Asturias Spain on Wednesday, January 29, 2020
"Control in modern times requires more than force, more than law. It requires that a population dangerously concentrated in cities and factories, whose lives are filled with cause for rebellion, be taught that all is right as it is. And so, the schools, the churches, the popular literature taught to be rich was a sign of superiority, to be poor a sign of personal failure."

Journal Entry 5 by webosfritos at Gijón, Asturies/Asturias Spain on Wednesday, January 29, 2020
"...in 1980...Wall Street owns the country. It is no longer a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, but a government of Wall Street, by Wall Street and for Wall Street...Our laws are the output of a system which clothes rascals in robes and honesty in rags."

Journal Entry 6 by webosfritos at Gijón, Asturies/Asturias Spain on Wednesday, January 29, 2020
"...it's inevitable that we've got to bring out the question of the tragic mixup in priorities. We are spending all of this money for death and destruction, and not nearly enough money for life and constructive development...when the guns of war become a national obsession, social needs inevitably suffer."

Journal Entry 7 by webosfritos at Gijón, Asturies/Asturias Spain on Wednesday, January 29, 2020
"We are not hated because we practice democracy, value freedom, or uphold human rights. We are hated because our government denies these things to people in the Third World countries whose resources are coveted by our multinational corporations."
